Frequently asked questions

  • What are the advantages of fibre optic cables?

Fiber optic cables are used mainly for their advantages over copper cables which include the following:
    a. They support higher bandwidth capacities.
    b. Light can travel further without needing as much of a signal boost.
    c. They are less susceptible to interference, such as electromagnetic interference.
    d. They can be submerged in water.
    e. Fiber optic cables are stronger, thinner and lighter than copper wire cables.
    f. They do not need to be maintained or replaced as frequently.

  • What AV applications require fiber technology?

Fiber optical technology is ideal when transmitting video, audio, and control signals over long distances. Long-distance transmission makes fiber optic products ideal for installation in stadiums, college campuses, medical facilities, corporate campuses, performing arts centres, concert halls, and office buildings.

  • Because fiber is made of glass, will it survive harsh conditions?

Made of ultra-pure silica, it is a solid material that can handle exposure to temperature and pressure extremes. The tensile strength (resistance to pulling) of optical fiber exceeds 600,000 pounds per square inch—making it stronger than copper or steel strands of the same diameter. When cabled, glass fiber is protected and further strengthened by aramid or fiberglass yarns, a fiberglass rod, and/or an outer jacket constructed of non-conductive materials.

  • What is fiber optic?

The fiber optic technology refers to transmitting light down the thin glass (sometimes plastic) strands. Fiber optic cables transfer information from one end to another.
